Artist Support Phase 1
Why We're Doing This
One of the things we've become increasingly convinced of over the last few years is that independent artists need more than just places to perform.
They need actual space, time, resources, support and community to meaningfully develop their work.
Sometimes that's accommodation. Sometimes it's rehearsal space. Sometimes it's education, mentoring, equipment, a bit of financial support, or just the opportunity to spend time focusing on a creative project without immediately worrying about how it's going to pay for itself.
We've spent the last few years thinking about the different ways Lazy Thinking might be able to help provide some of those things.
Artist Support Phase 1 is our first step in making that happen.
What We’re Building
Artist Support Phase 1 sits within a broader set of Lazy Thinking programs designed to support independent artists in practical, long-term ways. Some of this work is already live. Some of it is still being built.
This campaign is about helping make all of it more stable, more ambitious and available to more artists.
Lazy Thinking Learning
Helping independent artists generate new income streams through film, television and media placements while connecting music supervisors with genuinely exciting emerging Australian artists.
Already live and growing.
Lazy Thinking Sync
A series of always-free workshops, talks, training sessions and educational programs designed to give emerging artists practical knowledge about releasing music, touring, recording, promotion, funding, sync licensing and building sustainable creative careers.
Currently in development.
Applying the same ethos as the venue, our record label exists to support independent and emerging artists at every stage of their career get their music released and heard.
We provide practical support around releases, distribution, promotion and audience development, particularly for artists who may not otherwise have access to those resources
Already Underway
And then four simple stats:
3,000+ artists supported
700+ shows presented
7 nights a week of programming
Artist residency already launched
Lazy Thinking Records
Everything starts here.
More than 3,000 artists have performed at Lazy Thinking since we first decided to put on a bit of a show in the font area of our new record store in November 2023. Seven nights a week, independent artists are provided with a safe, inclusive and cost-free place to perform, experiment, develop audiences and build confidence.
The venue remains the foundation of everything else we do.
Artist Residency
2–4 week residencies providing artists with saccomodation, a recording studio, pace, time, financial support and multiple other resources to meaningfully develop new work. We're extremely proud of this program. It's already underway, but several key parts of the residency remain unfunded, including artist stipends, dedicated studio time and producer support.
